Dental Fillings
in Upper East, Manhattan
Cavities and small fractures are common—but they don’t have to show. At Blue Dental Clinic on the Upper East Side, we restore teeth with conservative techniques and tooth-colored materials, so your repair blends in and your bite feels natural.
Why choose us for fillings
- Conservative care: We remove only diseased tooth structure and preserve healthy enamel.
- Natural esthetics: Layered, shade-matched composites that mimic real enamel and translucency.
- Strong bonding: Meticulous isolation and adhesive protocols for a long-lasting seal.
- Comfort & clarity: Gentle numbing when needed, clear timelines and fees, and insurance-friendly support.
When a filling is recommended
- Early-to-moderate tooth decay
- Replacement of worn, leaking, or cracked fillings (metal or composite)
- Small chips, worn edges, or root-surface wear near the gumline
- Minor shape adjustments or gap refinement
Filling materials we use (and when)
- Composite (tooth-colored): Go-to for most front and back teeth; excellent appearance and reliable strength when bonded properly.
- Glass ionomer/rehydrating liners (select cases): Helpful near the gumline or for high-caries-risk areas; can release fluoride.
- Amalgam (silver): Rarely indicated in our practice; modern composites meet esthetic and functional goals in most cases.
If a defect is too large for a standard filling, we’ll recommend a custom inlay/onlay or crown to protect the tooth long term.
How the procedure works
- Diagnosis & plan: Visual exam and digital X-rays (as needed) to confirm size and location.
- Gentle prep: Remove decay and clean the area; local anesthesia if indicated.
- Adhesive bonding: Condition tooth surfaces and apply bonding agents.
- Place in layers: Composite is layered and sculpted to restore natural contours.
- Cure, shape & polish: Light-cure the material, refine the bite, and polish to a smooth, glossy finish.
Most single-tooth fillings take 30–45 minutes.
Sensitivity & recovery
It’s common to have mild temperature or bite sensitivity for a few days. This typically resolves quickly. If it lingers, we’ll adjust the bite or discuss other comfort options.
Longevity & care
With good home care and regular checkups, composite fillings can last many years. Protect your teeth and restorations by avoiding chewing ice or very hard objects and by wearing a night guard if you clench or grind.
Replacing old silver fillings
If an existing amalgam is cracked, leaking, or causing recurrent decay, we can replace it with a bonded, tooth-colored restoration. We’ll review pros, cons, and timing based on X-rays and clinical findings.
Alternatives to fillings
- Inlay/Onlay: For larger cavities or cracked cusps—strong, conservative ceramics that last.
- Crown: Full coverage for heavily damaged or root-canal–treated teeth.
We’ll recommend the least invasive option that still protects the tooth.
Cost & insurance
Fees depend on tooth location and size (small/medium/large). Most PPO plans contribute to composite fillings. We verify benefits in advance, provide clear written estimates, and submit claims on your behalf. Payment options are available.
FAQs
Will the filling match my tooth?
Yes. We custom-match and layer shades so the repair blends with surrounding enamel.
Do I need to be numb?
For very shallow fillings, often no. If there’s any chance of discomfort, we’ll numb thoroughly.
How soon can I eat?
Composite hardens immediately. Eat once numbness wears off; avoid very sticky or hard foods the same day.
What if the cavity is bigger than expected?
We’ll discuss inlay/onlay or crown options on the spot and provide an updated estimate before proceeding.
Can fillings whiten with whitening gels?
No—whitening doesn’t change composite color. If you plan to whiten, do it
before we match the filling shade.
