Composite Fillings

in Upper East, Manhattan

Small cavities and chips don’t have to show. At Blue Dental Clinic on the Upper East Side, composite (tooth-colored) fillings restore strength and shape with materials that blend seamlessly into your smile.

Why choose us for composite fillings

  • Conservative care: We remove only the damaged area and preserve healthy enamel.
  • Seamless esthetics: Layered, shade-matched composites mimic natural color and translucency.
  • Bonding done right: Careful isolation and adhesive technique for a durable, well-sealed repair.
  • Comfort & clarity: Gentle numbing when needed, straightforward timelines, and insurance-friendly support.

When a composite filling is recommended

  • Early to moderate decay
  • Repair of small chips, worn edges, or cervical (near-gumline) defects
  • Replacement of worn or leaking fillings (metal or composite)
  • Minor shape refinements or closing tiny gaps

What is a composite filling?

A biocompatible resin that bonds to your tooth. Because it adheres, we can keep preparations smaller and more conservative than with non-bonded materials.

How the procedure works

  1. Diagnosis & plan: Visual exam and digital X-rays as needed.
  2. Comfort & isolation: Local anesthesia when indicated; rubber dam or isolation to keep the area dry.
  3. Conservative prep: Remove decay or old failing material and cleanse the site.
  4. Bonding: Condition and prime the enamel/dentin for a strong, lasting bond.
  5. Layer & sculpt: Place composite in thin layers, shaping natural grooves and contours.
  6. Cure, finish & polish: Light-harden the material, refine your bite, and polish to a glossy, enamel-like sheen.

Most single-tooth fillings take 30–45 minutes.

Composite vs. other options

  • Inlay/Onlay: Chosen when a defect is too large for a standard filling but a full crown isn’t necessary.
  • Crown: Best for extensively cracked or heavily restored teeth needing full coverage.
  • Glass ionomer (select cases): Useful near the gumline or for high-risk areas; may release fluoride.

Longevity & care

With good home care and routine checkups, composite fillings can last many years. Avoid chewing ice or very hard items, and consider a night guard if you clench or grind.

Sensitivity & safety

Mild temperature sensitivity can occur for a few days and typically fades. Upon request, we can use BPA-derivative–free options; we’re happy to review product details with you.

Cost & insurance

Fees depend on tooth location and filling size. Most PPO plans help cover composite fillings. We verify benefits in advance, provide clear written estimates, and submit claims on your behalf.

FAQs

Will the filling match my tooth?
Yes—shades are selected and layered to blend with surrounding enamel.

Do I need to be numb?
For very shallow fillings, often no. If there’s any chance of discomfort, we’ll numb thoroughly.

How soon can I eat?
Composite hardens immediately under the curing light. Eat once numbness wears off; avoid very sticky or hard foods the same day.

Can you replace my silver fillings?
When a silver filling is cracked, leaking, or recurrent decay is present, replacement with composite (or inlay/onlay) is often appropriate.

Does whitening change a filling’s color?
No—whitening does
not lighten composite. If you plan to whiten, do it before we match your filling shade.
