Dental Conditions & Problems | Blue Dental NYC (Upper East Side, Manhattan)

Our Approach

Precise, prevention-first dentistry with clear explanations and zero pressure. We identify the cause of each problem—then fix it conservatively for results that last.

Symptom-to-Solution Quick Guide

  • Tooth pain to cold/sweets: early tooth decay or exposed dentin → fluoride/desensitizers, bonding, or filling.
  • Sharp pain on bite/release: cracked tooth or high contact → onlay/crown; bite adjustment; root canal if nerve involved.
  • Lingering hot/cold pain, night ache: inflamed/infected pulp → root canal + protective crown.
  • Zings to air/cold at gumline: recession/abfraction → desensitizers, bonding, grafting (periodontist).
  • Jaw tightness, morning headaches, worn teeth: bruxism → custom night guard; bite tuning; muscle care.
  • Swollen, bleeding gums: gingivitis/periodontitis → professional cleaning or deep cleaning + home-care plan.
  • Dark/yellow teeth or spots: extrinsic stain/erosion or intrinsic discoloration → cleaning/whitening, micro-bonding, veneers (case-by-case).
  • Crooked bite, spacing, front teeth not touching: crowding/gaps/open bite/crossbite/underbite → clear aligners or braces ± TADs; retainers.

Tooth Structure Problems

Cavities (Tooth Decay)

Bacteria + sugars dissolve enamel/dentin. Early lesions can remineralize; deeper ones need tooth-colored fillings or onlays/crowns.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

From trauma or hard foods. Options: polish, bonding, veneer, or onlay/crown depending on size and location.

Cracked Tooth

Pain on bite/release is common. Stabilize with onlay/crown; root canal only if the nerve is affected.

Tooth Erosion & Wear

Acid wear (diet/reflux) and/or grinding. Start with remineralization + habit changes; restore with bonding/onlays if structure is lost.

Nerve & Infection

Tooth Sensitivity

Often due to exposed dentin, recession, or early decay. Fluoride/desensitizers, bonding, and bite adjustment provide relief.

Root Canal Infection

Lingering pain, swelling, or abscess. Root canal therapy removes infection and preserves your tooth; usually followed by a crown.

Gums & Bone (Periodontal)

Gingivitis / Periodontitis

Bleeding, puffy gums or bone loss. Professional cleanings or scaling & root planing, plus tailored home care.

Receding Gums (Gum Recession)

Sensitivity, “long” teeth, notches. Desensitizers/bonding, night guard, bite tuning; gum grafting when coverage/thickness is needed.

Peri-Implant Issues

Bleeding or bone loss around implants. Maintenance cleanings, targeted home care; coordinate treatment if advanced.

Bite, Alignment & TMJ

Crowded Teeth / Gaps / “Bunny Teeth”

Clear aligners or braces; IPR/expansion as needed; retainers to protect results.

Open Bite / Crossbite / Underbite

Aligners/braces ± elastics/TADs; orthognathic surgery for severe skeletal cases (coordinated with our surgeons).

Tooth Grinding (Bruxism) & TMJ Strain

Custom night guard, bite equilibration, habit and muscle care; protect teeth and restorations.

Esthetics

Discolored Teeth

Cleaning & whitening first; spot treatments (microabrasion/infiltration), bonding, or porcelain veneers for resistant discoloration.

Black Triangles, Uneven Edges

Additive bonding to soften triangles; edge recontouring/veneers for symmetry after alignment.

Kids & Teens (Family Care)

  • Sealants on deep grooves, fluoride, eruption guidance.
  • Early ortho screens for crossbite, protrusion, spacing/crowding.
  • Sports mouthguards for contact activities.

When It’s an Emergency

  • Severe swelling, fever, spreading infection, trauma → urgent care/ER if airway risk; call us for same-day guidance.
  • Knocked-out tooth: place in milk or saline, don’t scrub the root, call immediately.
